F4D Skyray: The Last Fighter For Douglas Aircraft
The F4D Skyray, a delta-winged jet fighter, is a monument to Douglas Aircraft’s legacy, as it is the company’s final contribution to fighter aircraft. Introduced in 1956, this supersonic marvel was the first carrier-based aircraft to hold a world absolute speed record and exceed the sound barrier in level flight. Developed by Douglas aerodynamicists Gene Root and Apollo M.O. “Amo” Smith, the aircraft was equipped with four Colt M12 cannons, an AN/APQ-50A search/single-track radar, and a maximum external load of 4,000 pounds.
