P-47 Thunderbolt – The Flying Tank That Dominated WWII
The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was a WWII-era fighter aircraft produced from 1941 to 1945 by Republic Aviation. Known for its high-altitude combat and ground-attack capabilities, it was one of the heaviest fighters of the war, weighing up to 8 tons when fully loaded. Armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns, it could carry 5-inch rockets or 2,500 lbs of bombs.
Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the P-47 excelled in both the European and Pacific theaters. Its turbosupercharger system gave it an edge at high altitudes, making it a dominant force in air-to-air and escort missions.
